Tribute

From Children

I am sharing the thoughts and memories of mummy on behalf of all our sibling. Mummy was born on 10th of May 1934 to Rossamma and Ambrose in Thellipallai. She was the 3rd child among the 5 siblings. She was educated at Illaivalai convent. She lost her father when she was 12 and the eldest siblings took over the family responsibilities. After school years they moved to Jaffna. She started to work with the Ceylon Telecommunication where she met her life partner through telephone calls. He was working as a post-master in a different town at that time and fell in love by hearing each other’s voice. They married in 1957. Our parents had 5 biological children, but as the years went by more children got added into our parent’s life to share the love and care. Julie acca came into their life as soon as they were married, my parents loved her as their own eldest. They were mummy and papa to everyone who knew them. Unfortunately, papa was called home when he was 49 years old in 1984. Since then mummy took over the responsibility for all of us and did a tremendous job making sure our future was secure. This she did by relying on Jesus. Everything she did was rooted in her faith in Jesus. At times we did not understand but was amazed at how things turned around for her. She never wavered even when she faced the storms, all she called on was Jesus. That Jesus never let her down. Her heart was broken when Julie acca went to be with the Lord in 2018.

God blessed her with everything she needed, she lad an ordinary life. Anything she had she gave it away freely to those who were in need. She supported so many children in their studies, widows in providing for their families and the work of God. She never forgot the path she travelled, when she had everything, still she lived depending on Jesus. She never wasted anything.

Mummy always lived her faith. Jesus was her priority, he never let her down. He was her strength, her wisdom and ever-present companion. She saw visions and dreams which she used in her prayer life. She knew what to pray for each one and what encouraging words they needed to hear.

I remember my school days, when we buy our exercise books and get ready for the new year. There will be an extra set of books ready with covers, it is for someone else who was is need. We were not wealthy to share with others; contrary it was a struggle for Mummy to look after all of us. It never stopped her helping others.

Mummy was a good seamstress. She sewed our cloths, even my brothers trousers and shirts. When our school uniforms were made there were one or two extra ones made, so that another child could go to school perfectly dressed.

She was very careful in tithing. I can remember the times when mum’s hens laid eggs, the first set will be sent to the church, for the servants of God. She took God’s word literally, and he never put her to shame.

As my siblings remembered their younger days, there was never a time they had meals alone. There will be always another person at the table. Even after coming to Norway she continued to support and encourage all her adapted children. The messages we received from some of them said that she showed her love through words, actions and personality. One called her a noble lady. The other said he will miss her guidance and encouragement which has led to his success in life. Her life was a beautiful example of the true love of Jesus.

Mummy we will miss you very much, specially your grandchildren. But we know you are with your beloved Jesus. We will live our life following your example and meet you one day in heaven.

I will leave you with a blessing from Numbers 6:24-26 The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you, and gracious to you. The Lord lift His countenance upon you and give you peace.

From Grand Childen:

Suthanja:

Amamma, you liked always to read the magazine Barnas blad which I get from Koret på sporet. Solving the crossword was your favorite. You knew the bible so well, that you didn’t mind the crosswords were in Norwegian.

When you were stronger, you always asked if I was hungry when I came from school and you made nudles. I know you love tic tac and you never said no for ice cream

From Thanushan:

From Sujith:

Amamma, you always had something good to say, anywhere or anytime. You could so much, and you always wanted to help us become better human beings, and better Christians. You tought us thing not only with your words, but with your actions, smiles, jokes, and also of how much you cared about others. You would always shout at me telling me not to lose the bus, and you have tought me so much about everything.

From Nathashia:

Appama was the greatest grandma anyone could ask for. She was a person filled with love who cared for everybody that she met in her life. In one sense you could say she acted as a grandma for everybody, not only her grandchildren. When we were younger, we spent a lot of time together. As often as she could, she would visit us. We would play board games for what felt like hours. Either that or she would teach me about Jesus Christ and the Bible. She always asked me two questions: Have you eaten anything, and have you been reading the bible? I think this shows how she really cared for my well-being. Every time she visited, she would always stop at the shop on her way to buy my favorite chocolate buns for me. Even when she had days when her legs were hurting, she would do this, even if it meant she had to walk further. That’s the kind of person she was, one that was willing to go the extra mile for everybody she loved. Just like with my chocolate buns, she noticed and loved us allividually.

From Solomon:

Ammamah I will never be able to thank you enough for the decades of prayer over my life. It's been such a blessing to me in ways I know and also will never know. Thank you for always pointing me to God, thank you for the life lessons you've spoken into my world that have helped shape my spiritual life and developed me into the person I am today.

Even though we were usually on other sides of the world, you never missed my birthday. I will never forget the caring love of a grandmother, you've taught me how to love through the simplest things, and how in life it's usually the smallest details that end up being the most important.

I will definitely miss you, and miss giving you such a big hug that you tell me it's enough because I'm squeezing too hard. I know for sure you will be praying for me in heaven, and I am so glad that you will be dancing with Jesus, and cannot wait to see you both one day! Thank you for teaching me to pray for my family, and to eat before going to church, otherwise I will be distracted from what God is saying to me.

It's been such a priveledge and pleasure to have you, at all, in my life, when so many people have never known their grandparents. I ask God that he continue the work he has begun in our family and that he would continue to show his countenance upon us as we seek his kingdom daily through the example of the life you lived in front of us. Goodbye for now Ammamah.
